If you’re doing any surface mount work, you should look into these resistor kits from Digikey. You can get them in any package (these are the 0805) and for ~$60 they’re a great deal. The compact box has strips of 50 each of 1 ohm to 1 Mohm 5% resistors. I’ve used them extensively when prototyping designs and reworking boards – and have the 0805, 0603 and 1206 sets.

Sure Electronics (www.sure-electronics.com) carries something “similar” for those on a budget, although their kits tend to be 50x100pcs, and not major-branded. But they’re $4.49 or under $10 if you want to them in their own condos. They have 1206 and 0805, and I believe they have at least one capacitor kit too.

I haven’t done business with Sure (yet). Just putting this out there. 1/12 the cost, or 1/5 with housing.
Or alternatively, this (one of these) just showed up at SeeedStudio, http://www.seeedstudio.com/depot/0805-smt-resistor-sample-book-8496-pcs-in-177-values-p-570.html and http://www.seeedstudio.com/depot/0805-smt-capacitor-sample-book-4416-pcs-in-92-values-p-571.html.
Almost looks like samples kits straight from Yageo. Total passives bondage (ok, bindage).
