Tonight 10pm ET – “Ask an Engineer” – Make: Electronics night! + MONOCHRON

Pt 2592
Tonight, Saturday 2/20/2010 – 10pm ET – “Ask an Engineer” – our weekly LIVE video chat!

What is “Ask an engineer”? From the electronics enthusiast to the professional community – “Ask an Engineer” has a little bit of everything for everyone. If you’re a beginner, or an seasoned engineer – stop in and see what we’re up to! We have demos of projects and products we’re working on, we answer you engineering and electronics questions and we have a trivia question + give away each week.

This week we’ll go through some of chapters one of the books we stock “Make: Electronics by Charles Platt” We checked out this book before putting it in the shop, its geared towards ultimate-beginners and teaches electronics starting from basic core of analog to some digital to microcontrollers. You’ll learn tools, prototyping soldering techniques, transistors, 555’s, etc. while completing useful projects. A nice and tidy intro! This book is a good accompaniment to learning microcontrollers/Arduino in that it fills the necessary electronics theory and background.

Pt 2593
Next up tonight, we’ll have a demo of our new kit we’re about to release the MONOCHRON. If you’d like to order it we’ll have a discount code and this will be the last week you can pre-order it at this price.

Stop breadboarding and soldering – start making immediately! Adafruit’s Circuit Playground is jam-packed with LEDs, sensors, buttons, alligator clip pads and more. Build projects with Circuit Playground in a few minutes with the drag-and-drop MakeCode programming site, learn computer science using the CS Discoveries class on code.org, jump into CircuitPython to learn Python and hardware together, TinyGO, or even use the Arduino IDE. Circuit Playground Express is the newest and best Circuit Playground board, with support for CircuitPython, MakeCode, and Arduino. It has a powerful processor, 10 NeoPixels, mini speaker, InfraRed receive and transmit, two buttons, a switch, 14 alligator clip pads, and lots of sensors: capacitive touch, IR proximity, temperature, light, motion and sound. A whole wide world of electronics and coding is waiting for you, and it fits in the palm of your hand.

  1. “its geared towards ultimate-beginners…”

At first glance while flipping through the pages the ultimate beginner would say say “huh?” but the way it’s written or I should say the way it was “pieced together” is top notch.

Everything is a building block of the project before and because of the not so “dumb downed” style of writing going back and re-reading the lessons feels fresh and little more informative each time!

I give it three thumbs up 🙂

  2. Good book however due to physical limitations I give only 2 thumbs up!

  3. Wish you guys could do the chat earlier, it’s like 4 AM for me :(.
