“Soft Start” is a term usually used for DC-DC converters and the like. It is a gradual (and often programmable) ramping up of voltage over time so you don’t brownout your supplies when a micro wants tons of current during its startup cycle.
Doing this for AC would be difficult because the Power Switch Tail is just a relay (only on or off). A solution would be running it all through a couple power transistors which you could ramp on, but that’s overly complicated and would drive up the cost. Just listen to LadyAda and try not to overload the relay. Most devices should be able to handle their full current at turn on (like a lamp) but the relay will be the failpoint.
