We’re going to start collecting and publishing all the little mods and hacks and tricks we’ve put into our zen cart installation. Zen cart is an open source shopping cart, its very powerful and we really like it! One of the beauties of open source is how easy it is for us to customize and tweak out the system, which lets us do what $10,000 shopping systems can’t do! These mods are for 1.3x versions of zencart and are probably adaptable to OScommerce. They are all released public domain (or whatever license the original file had if it’s a direct mod of existing code). These codes and mods are TOTALLY UNSUPPORTED, are not guaranteed for anything and may not be fit for any use! They may not work, they may break your store, they may cause you to lose money, they may set your cat on fire. We already have two mods in there but we added one today, for adding barcodes to the top of invoices. Perfect if you have an automated barcode-based shipping or inventory system – (www.ladyada.net/learn/barcodescan)

Oh noes!
Zen cart is a useful piece of software and is reasonably simple to customize. However, as someone who fixes other people’s security breaches for a living, I can tell you that Zen Cart is right up there with Joomla as one of the most dangerous pieces of software to install on your website. We see several hacked Zen Cart sites a month — I just cleaned up one this morning (yes, really!).
That’s not to say that your site will certainly get hacked this month, this year, or in the foreseeable future. But do be very, very careful, and remember: just because you’re fully patched doesn’t mean you’re safe.
hi tyler – thanks for the note, since you have the expertise – maybe you can help out the community and review the mods we release for potential issues. more small biz are using zen cart, it would be great for someone to assist with any security tips.
Tyler I think it’s cool Ladyada is releasing these mods. Thank you! I am trying to start my own kit company too.
Don’t be selfish! If you know of hacks even with patches for ZenCart write an article about it!
