Ok folks, there was an earthquake in NYC now there is a hurricane heading this way. We will keep everyone updated if for any reasons orders cannot ship over the weekend or early next week. Stay tuned to the blog, twitter and g+ ! Here is a real time tracker from the NY Times. We have provisions, we’re 4 floors up and mosfet the cat has a life vest if needed. Google-like map here…
Adafruit publishes a wide range of writing and video content, including interviews and reporting on the maker market and the wider technology world. Our standards page is intended as a guide to best practices that Adafruit uses, as well as an outline of the ethical standards Adafruit aspires to. While Adafruit is not an independent journalistic institution, Adafruit strives to be a fair, informative, and positive voice within the community – check it out here: adafruit.com/editorialstandards
Stop breadboarding and soldering – start making immediately! Adafruit’s Circuit Playground is jam-packed with LEDs, sensors, buttons, alligator clip pads and more. Build projects with Circuit Playground in a few minutes with the drag-and-drop MakeCode programming site, learn computer science using the CS Discoveries class on code.org, jump into CircuitPython to learn Python and hardware together, TinyGO, or even use the Arduino IDE. Circuit Playground Express is the newest and best Circuit Playground board, with support for CircuitPython, MakeCode, and Arduino. It has a powerful processor, 10 NeoPixels, mini speaker, InfraRed receive and transmit, two buttons, a switch, 14 alligator clip pads, and lots of sensors: capacitive touch, IR proximity, temperature, light, motion and sound. A whole wide world of electronics and coding is waiting for you, and it fits in the palm of your hand.

Does MOSFET really have a life-vest?
@Milarepa: Actually, I’m pretty sure Mosfet has his own helicopter/submarine hybrid. 🙂
Stay away from windows on the windward side and low elevation land on the seafront. Make sure you have batteries for your LED lantern and a couple of good books you’ve been waiting to dig into. It’ll all soon pass.
From the land of Magnitude 6.5 or it didn’t happen. Our last encounter with a hurricane on the west coast was the Columbus Day Storm of 1962. Trees down everywhere, quite a mess. For us, most head out across the Pacific. It’s a rare one that gets a steering currrent that pulls it the other way.
“Live! From New York! It’s Ask an absolutely sopping-wet Engineer!” 😉
Well, assuming of course that the internet connection holds out!
Seriously, though… do be careful. As Sean said – watch out for the windows. Up 4 floors *should* have thicker tempered glass in them (mostly to keep people from going thru them if they stumble and fall into them), and so *should* be more resistant to damage, but nonetheless…
You mention provisions… besides the obvious — fresh water, no-cook no-referigeration food (and the means to open the packages!), batteries, flashlights, battery-powered AM radio, space blanket, etc. — how about repair & improvisation supplies? Duct tape, a couple of tarps, rope, some 5 min epoxy, and one of the larger leatherman-style multitool (like a wave or a 300)?
Oh, and I wanna see a photo of MOSFET in his vest! 😉
FWIW,
One should consider leaving highly populated areas in any case–prior to this event. as we go along here metro dwellers won’t be able to handle the radical amperage and voltage fluctions (speaking metaphorically) that are now sure to come. Just say’n :). Good luck to all on this round.
You guys be safe! Don’t mess around, heard there were mandatory evacs for the city now.
