DIY Video Series by Radioshack and PopMech

Radioshack is now sponsoring a series of videos about DIY electronics via MAKE. According to some previous announcements there are a few thousands stores that have (or will have) Arduinos on the shelves too.

Adafruit publishes a wide range of writing and video content, including interviews and reporting on the maker market and the wider technology world. Stop breadboarding and soldering – start making immediately! Adafruit’s Circuit Playground is jam-packed with LEDs, sensors, buttons, alligator clip pads and more. Build projects with Circuit Playground in a few minutes with the drag-and-drop MakeCode programming site, learn computer science using the CS Discoveries class on code.org, jump into CircuitPython to learn Python and hardware together, TinyGO, or even use the Arduino IDE. Circuit Playground Express is the newest and best Circuit Playground board, with support for CircuitPython, MakeCode, and Arduino. It has a powerful processor, 10 NeoPixels, mini speaker, InfraRed receive and transmit, two buttons, a switch, 14 alligator clip pads, and lots of sensors: capacitive touch, IR proximity, temperature, light, motion and sound. A whole wide world of electronics and coding is waiting for you, and it fits in the palm of your hand.

  1. Just went to my local shack last night to pick up one of the new parallax PIR sensors they started carrying and sure enough they have arduinos too! Granted it looks like they are only available as part of a starter kit for ~$60.

  2. I bought the kit from a local Radioshack last Sunday. It is the Makershed version of the Getting Started with Arduino. An easy way to get $10 off is to take the online survey listed at the bottom of your receipt.

  3. I really applaud Radio Shack for what they’re doing – getting back to their roots. But man… Those actors are stiff!

  4. I’m also proud of radio shack for focusing more on DIY, but these videos are useless without a parts list, schematic or a link to a How To.

If you go to The Great Create portion of their website and search for Atari Punk or LED Art, no results are found.

I know kits for both of these projects are available from the makershed but not everyone knows that. Now that I think about it, maybe the fact they these are available somewhere else is the reason radio shack isn’t providing more info on them.

Anyway, I live in a small town and radio shack is my only source for parts unless I want to drive an hour or order online so I’m definitely happy to have them.

there’s the circuit (555 version) if you wanted it but i think they’re more just advertising that you can build it with stuff from radioshack.

more of just “hey do you like doing cool diy stuff? you can buy stuff to do that at radioshack”

i agree that it would be better if it was more instructional, but that would make the video quite a bit longer

  6. Ok. Is there a way to control this circuit with a digital potentiometer or microcontroller?

  7. Thanks for the link zuul.
