Dean Camera joins ATMEL as AVR Applications Engineer

At the completion of my internship at Atmel Norway in late 2010, I was offered a full time position working as an AVR Applications Engineer in the Atmel Norway facility. While the start date of this job was delayed to give me time to finish my University degrees, I have now completed all required materials and am only a few weeks away from the big move. In early 2012, I will be moving across to the other side of the world, to join the ranks of the Atmel AVR Applications group and live in Norway.

ATMEL is getting serious.

  1. Congratulations to Mr. Camera!

    But there are some questions:

    * It is nice to see ATMEL embracing the cultivation and eventual hiring of Interns. Many countries (U.S. included) make this difficult through regulation, especially in Unionized environments.

    * What will happen to LUFA? Remember LUFA is not FOSS ($1,500 commercial license but how much of that is going for a USB license key?) But LUFA still has its place. One wonders if the LUFA support and development will stall and/or vanish due to the Mr. Camera’s hiring by ATMEL. Interesting that this is not addressed by Mr. Camera yet, as far as I can tell.

    * Keep in-mind the muddled history of the now "inactive" WinAVR. Didn’t AMTEL’s hiring the WinAVR key developer bring this about? If, so – it may be a good thing… The result being GCC and avr-libc being brought into AVRStudio-5? I gave-up trying to follow this issue. Perhaps someone can reply to this comment and clear this up.

    * I certainly hope Mr. Camera will be allowed to "clean-up" the (IMO) pretty-bad USB examples using the native USB on-chip stacks in the ATMEL documentation and Web sites.

  2. @Drone LUFA is FLOSS.
