Today is a significant one in our history, because today is the day that Pachube grows up. You might have noticed already: Pachube is now Cosm!
We haven’t exactly been silent over the last few months since being acquired by LogMeIn but we also haven’t spoken much about the biggest task that’s been occupying us almost round the clock: building out and relaunching the service under a new (pronounceable! spellable!! memorable!!!) name, with a completely new (cleaner! easier!! functional!!!) design, that brings with it a whole host of features and attributes that help you build Internet of Things products, applications and services more quickly, scalably and collaboratively. Always nice to see usability improvements, in any case, but you definitely want a name that people know how to pronounce, so good on them for biting the bullet and switching.
Curious how this works out for them, though. They have a good service, and nice to see people focusing on usability. Github sets the bar pretty high for mixing technical prowess with ease of use (once you understand git a bit) and just being attractive to look at. It just makes you want to use it and get over those first few quirks when you’re new to it.
I’m kind of a usability geek myself, and I tend to spend too much time pixel peeping LCDs or worrying about little aesthetic details … but it really is more important than I think we, as engineers, acknowledge with our actions and the way we use our limited time, effort and resources.
