Most retailers put their stuff on sale the day after Thanksgiving, but we thought it’d be way more fun to give you a sale before Thanksgiving. That way you have something to build the day after.

The day after Thanksgiving, known in retail as “Black Friday”, has become bittersweet. The endless quest for $10 waffle irons and $75 TVs has gotten so ridiculous that people are spending the wee hours camping out in parking lots. Personally, I’m much more inclined to make something rather than go out and buy something on that day. I think a lot of other people feel the same way, so we’ve come up with a way to help you do just that. It’s called Hack Friday.

What is Hack Friday?
Hack Friday is an alternative to Black Friday that celebrates personal initiative and creativity. Instead of mobbing the local box store at 4am, you sleep in, stay home, and work on your own projects with the people you love. A Hack Friday project can be anything you like, from gardening to programming to woodwork and beyond — the point is to encourage active making instead of passive consuming. It’s sort of like an unofficial, nationwide 24-hour hackathon. 🙂

We’re starting our sale today, a week before Turkey Day + 1, so that you can stock up on kits and components and be ready to go on Black Hack Friday.

The day of (11/23), we’ll be featuring a running showcase of projects from around the web. Tag your projects with #hackfriday on G+ and/or Twitter, and we’ll post them on the blog.

  1. If I didn’t have to work on Black Friday, I would be out in line at Best Buy. I wouldn’t be there to buy anything, I would be there with with my TV-B-Gone for some fun. Maybe even my android tablet with the wifi jammer turned on.
