A Look Inside MIT’s Tech Model Railroad Club

A neat video about MIT’s TMRC:

Tucked deep within MIT’s campus is a miniature world of model trains, elaborate miniature buildings and detailed sceneries. Now entering its 65th year, Tech Model Railroad Club of MIT (TMRC) still caters to model railroaders, rail-fans and hackers alike.

In this video we take a tour of the layout and the history through the eyes of club members Quentin Smith, Rebecca Perry and John Macnamara.

Make a robot friend with Adafruit’s CRICKIT – A Creative Robotics & Interactive Construction Kit. It’s an add-on to our popular Circuit Playground Express, FEATHER and other platforms to make and program robots with CircuitPython, MakeCode, and Arduino. Start controlling motors, servos, solenoids. You also get signal pins, capacitive touch sensors, a NeoPixel driver and amplified speaker output. It complements & extends your boards so you can still use all the goodies on the microcontroller, now you have a robotics playground as well.

  1. Even if you are not into model trains check the Miniatur Wunderland in Hamburg, Germany:

  2. As a maker neck-deep in model railroading technology, it’s nice to see the TMRC featured here. Unfortunately, the video does very little to illuminate the rather impressive technology used by TMRC, or its historical importance as the root of much of modern hackerdom. Model railroading poses some really interesting engineering problems (mostly because you only get those two wires, aka rails!), and a lot of really interesting solutions to those problems—this is an arena ripe for experimentation!
