Flora Brake Light Backpack #WearableWednesday

Say hello to my new favorite bag! Improve your visibility on your motorcycle by installing an LED pixel display inside your backpack! This weather-resistant project uses a Flora and accelerometer to auto-detect braking and uses a simple wireless module to trigger turn signal animations. Check out the complete tutorial on the Adafruit Learning System, download the code from Github, and watch the video on YouTube (please subscribe) or Vimeo.

  1. Very nice build- we’ve been talking about something similar for scooter and bike riders here on Maui. These folks are hard to see normally, and given how many ride in the rain, with even less visibility, the packs would be great.

Couple things I was thinking about with the design/project…
    1) Flora is about as easy to get as a Raspberry Pi these days – which for most of us means not at all. Backorders may come in but the wait list seems longer than the shipped supplies.
Since you are not sewing any connections to the Flora, any arduino compatible would do. Teensy or Arduino Micro should be sufficient (although the 3.3v accelerometer would need level shifter).

    2) How about adding some waterproof connectors and Cable Glands
    https://www.adafruit.com/products/744 4 wire for LEDs
    https://www.adafruit.com/products/743 2 wire for switch
    https://www.adafruit.com/products/761 for gland
The connectors would make it easier to remove the control box for reworking separate from the backpack.
The gland would be an alternative to the Sugu, but that miracle material might be a better choice in this case.

    Thanks for the article!
