Thingiverse’s OpenSCAD/MakerBot Customizer Challenge Ends Tomorrow! #3dthursday

MakerBotCustomizer

The Thingiverse challenge to create projects for its hosted version of the open source parametric design tool OpenSCAD (their app version with some great GUI tweaks is called the “MakerBot Customizer”) ends tomorrow!

This Thingiverse app allows users to post parametric models that visitors can then modify on the web to create the printable parts they need. Check out this message from the MakerBot blog from last Friday — if this is your type of project, you’d better put your project together quickly for tomorrow’s deadline!

And below are a few contributions created from makers in our community who sent them in as blogtips for #3DThursday. We’d love to hear about other interesting parametric projects you have created!

DecimatedOxysteleSinesis

Project Shellter – Decimated Oxystele sinesis by TeamTeamUSA:

Why should only hermit crabs wear a shellter?
Now you both can enjoy Oxystele sinesis “heart” shells!

Create a customized home for your crab, and a stylish necklace or earring for you that reveals where another species lives.

The Customizer is the missing piece to enable a hermit crab caretaker to make the correctly sized shell for a crab. A Sage (http://www.sagemath.org) version has been in development, but the moment the Customizer was announced, development shifted to this thing.

This is a first version; other versions will be forthcoming.

GearBearingbyemmett

Gear Bearing by emmett:

The trouble with 3D printing a ball bearing is that spheres don’t adhere to the 45 degree rule, so they tend to print poorly, or if metal balls are used instead, then the bearing requires assembly. This is a new kind of bearing that can only be manufactured by 3D printing and comes preassembled.

It is a planetary gearset and functions like a cross between a needle bearing and a thrust bearing. No cage is required to keep the rollers in place, because their gearing keeps them perfectly spaced. The gears are all herringbone, which is why it cannot be disassembled and also why it can act as a thrust bearing. If you’re wondering how well a 3D printed bearing could work under load, please check out my video: youtu.be/ZghwSBiM0sU

This design is fully parametric and made to be adjusted in the Customizer app to whatever you need. Thanks to aubenc for finding a problem in the first version.
