Visions of the Universe


The image above is remarkable for several reasons. First, it is one of the earliest detailed pictures of a sunspot. Second, it was meticulously drawn by hand by astronomer Samuel Pierpont Langley in 1873.

The image is now part of an exhibit at the National Maritime Museum in London, focused on beautiful and scientifically important astronomy images. You can check out more pictures here.
