Open Call: Eyebeam Computational Fashion Fellowship 2013-4:

Eyebeam announces the Computational Fashion Fellowship call for proposals for 2013/2014. Computational Fashion is an Eyebeam initiative bringing together artists, scientists, technologists, and the fashion industry to explore new ideas at the intersection of fashion and technology. The Computational Fashion Fellowship supports research, collaboration, and the presentation of experimental and cutting edge technology within fashion.  Two teams of designers/scientists have been working in 2012/2013 on creative projects, and we are currently looking to fund one additional 12-month project starting in October 2013.

APPLICATION DEADLINE: Monday, July 8, 12:00 PM (noon) Eastern Standard Time

Background
With the emergence of wearable technology in consumer products like the Nike+ FuelBand and Google Glass, advances in nanotechnology, and the explosion of interest in 3D printing technology across design and manufacturing, it is an exciting time to push the potential of fashion and technology even further. Over the past year, Computational Fashion has been showcasing current work researched, tested, and manufactured in New York, as well as supporting forward-thinking collaborations between fashion designers, game designers, artists, architects, engineers, and scientists through the Fellowship program.

New York-based fashion designers with a strong interest in all aspects of wearable technology are invited to apply. Projects might integrate digital fabrication, smart textiles, energy sources, or human-computer interaction with garments or accessories, but with a specific focus on technological innovation as it relates to the body. The selected Fellow will work collaboratively – assembling their own team or working with a team that Eyebeam helps organize – bringing together the expertise of designers, technologists, and scientists to produce visionary and impactful new work.

Participation
Eyebeam will select one project, helping to produce, present and promote the work over a twelve-month development process. The selected Computational Fashion Fellow (and his/her collaborator/s) will be awarded a $25,000 production budget and resources to develop their work, including desk space and access to design and fabrication studios at Eyebeam. At the end of the twelve-month production period, the resulting work will be presented to the public at an exhibition and symposium of the work of all Computational Fashion Fellows. The Fellow will also be expected to document their progress, take part in Eyebeam’s weekly Residents and Fellows meetings and monthly Stop Work sessions to present the work in process and get feedback, and present bimonthly reports to Eyebeam and to Computational Fashion’s lead advisor, Dr. Sabine Seymour.
