Small embedded systems are all about compromises between performance, code size, SRAM usage, etc., and both the fun and the headache is finding the right tradeoffs and creative solutions for your problems. While code optimization should always be the last thing you do — my mantra is working/clean/small/fast in that order — when you do need to do some bit magic (and most of the magic in embedded in indeed twiddling bits), you might find ‘Bit Twiddling Hacks‘ a good read to pick up some tips and tricks!
