ambi-tv is a software framework to build an Ambilight clone based on an embedded Linux board (like Raspberry Pi), a video capture device and an RGB LED strip.
unlike many other solutions, ambi-tv can work with any video source and does not require an external computer to drive it.
the software is open-source, and the hardware setup is extremely easy to build off of readily available components. it is also possible to extend ambi-tv with your own effects or drivers.
Digital RGB LED Weatherproof Strip 32 LED – (1m) – These LED strips are fun and glowy. There are 32 RGB LEDs per meter, and you can control each LED individually! Yes, that’s right, this is the digitally-addressable type of LED strip. You can set the color of each LED’s red, green and blue component with 7-bit PWM precision (so 21-bit color per pixel). The LEDs are controlled by shift-registers that are chained up down the strip so you can shorten or lengthen the strip. Only 2 digital output pins are required to send data down. (read more)

Just occurred to me that I can use the analog comp video output from my amp and do away with the HDMI splitter and composite vid converter. This makes me happy 🙂
