Step detection is an interesting problem to solve in SW, and while there are dozens of algorithms out there, Analog Devices put out a good, reasonably easy to digest algorithm in their ‘Full-Featured Pedometer Design Realized with 3-Axis Digital Accelerometer‘ app note. It’s a good starting point if you’re trying to build a better fitbit yourself (though like any good algorithm, it’s all in the details and how you handle the edge cases!).
