Glow in the Dark Plant!

American firm genetically engineers worlds first glow in the dark plant dezeen 4

This genetically engineered, glow in the dark plant lights up all on its own. The plant, named “Starlight Avatar” (of course), hails from Bigelow at the Donald Danforth Plant Center in St. Louis, Missouri, via dezeen:

“There are no comparables on the market, these are truly first of their kind,” the plants’ creator and Bioglow founder Alexander Krichevsky told Dezeen.

Krichevsky, a specialist in microbiology, developed the plants by introducing DNA from luminescent marine bacteria to the chloroplast genome of a common houseplant, so the stem and leaves constantly emit a faint light similar to that produced by fireflies and other bioluminescent organisms…

  1. Very Cool! Note that this is the same technology the Glowing Plant project is developing (http://www.glowingplant.com/).

Guess the main question is: do you prefer to bid a couple thousand $ in an auction for one of 20 exclusive plants from a Monsanto backed corporation, or pay $50 to preorder a packet of seeds from a bunch of biohackers working out of a shipping container?
