Costumes from Halo always impress me, but this recent build by the The Mgalekgolo Twins is something else entirely. The sheer scale blows me away. The Mgalekgolo are known has Hunters in the game, and the Twins based their build on the full scale Mgalekgolo seen in Halo 4. Yes, full scale. They’re approximately 10 feet tall, and the Twins designed the costume “in a permanent crouching position so humans standing inside do not have to crouch the entire time in stilts.” They debuted the costume at Emerald City Comicon last weekend, and it looks like it attracted nonstop crowds. As you would expect.
They documented the build on the 405th, and it started with paper templates. Each piece of armor was made from foam and coated with resin:
We were planning on using Smooth Cast 65D.
It’s a semi-rigid casting resin that will give the foam a hard outside surface without adding a lot of weight and it won’t harm the integrity of the foam. We have experimented with this in the past and have found it is pretty flexible as well in thin coats so mobility of the armor is not compromised.
Given how many pieces of armor there are and how gigantic each piece is, each step had to take forever. The first post in the build thread is from October 2014, and I can’t believe the costume was built in a five to six month time period.
