After watching episodes of Circuit Playground, Forums user devellison’s 4-year-old twins were inspired to build their own lemon battery, which they did:
But then they set out to improve the design to their liking, which they did!
They really wanted to do the lemon batteries, so we did. It worked, but only some LEDs would light up well (one of my newer 5mm blue LEDs did way better than my old scrap 3mm ones). With 6 lemons in series, we measured about 5V but less than a mA of current when lighting the LED. Then my daughter decided to improve the battery – while we’re still working on really getting the concept of a circuit at 4, I wasn’t about to stop her 😉
And they came up with the absolutely brilliant lemon work of art:
