From Maker to Market 06 – Funding–How Adafruit developed Circuit Playground, an educational board for makers.
Money may be the root of all evil, but it is also the most necessary of all evils. Now, you’ll need to secure those dollars for your project. If you need to create accounts, round up investors, or apply for grants or fellowships, there’s no time like the present. Set up crowdfunding accounts, take a trip to the bank, or start saving. Finally, make a marketing plan with special attention paid to funding—and stick with it.
This will be a little different because we’re not going to get funding; instead, we’re going to show how to calculate fixed costs, NREs, yield, labor, test and packaging time, and component costs to figure out how to price the board. We also show setting up a ‘coming soon’ on Adafruit to get signups and how we estimate sales based on these factors. This episode will dive into ways to sell your design such as: organic sales pros and cons, Tindie, some advantages and disadvantages of crowdfunding, successful maker funding campaigns, some that burned out, and what are patterns of success.
