Interesting strategy from McDonald’s Canada! While not quite and acknowledgement that their food is unhealthy, it’s a step (haha) in the right direction I guess? Via Wareable.com
McDonald’s Canada is giving away kid-friendly wearable step trackers in Happy Meals, as it embarks on an Olympics-related marketing push.
The Step-it tracker has been created by the fast-food giant, and offers a few basic features to inspire kids to get active. Aside from providing a daily step count, the trackers will also blink based on the speed of a child’s movement. There are six designs being given away.
The Step-it is hardly Fitbit level of build-quality. The step trackers look pretty darn cheap, but if kids can benefit from the same motivation to be active as adults using fully fledged activity bands then it can only be a good thing.
“Physical activity is important to everyone of all ages. We very much support children’s well-being,” said McDonald’s Canada senior marketing manager Michelle McIlmoyle.
“Whether it’s our sponsorship of the minor hockey program atoMc in local markets or within our Happy Meals, our objective is always to provide a balance…we thought it was important to leverage a concept that brings that to life in an easy way.”
For the record there’s 539 calories in a McDonald’s Happy Meal, which means an average 8-year-old would have to walk for 300 minutes to burn it off. Best get started then.
