Rosa Parks in Her Own Words #BlackHistoryMonth #RosaParksDay
Rosa Parks Day is an American holiday in only 4 U.S. states: California, my home state of Missouri, Ohio, and Oregon. The latter two states celebrate the holiday on the day Rosa Parks was arrested, December 1. The former two states celebrate the holiday on her birthday, today, February 4. Here at Adafruit we follow the latter designation & commend Rosa Parks for her commitment to social justice and equal rights for all. And I personally hope more states adopt a holiday in her honor in whatever way they see fit for their citizenry. And on that note the state of NY’s PBS Learning Media have a quick video below of Rosa in her own words, retelling her story and the moment that resulted in an eventual Supreme Court decision:
This interview with civil rights activist Rosa Parks describes her role in the Montgomery Bus Boycott. On December 1, 1955, Parks refused to give up her seat to a white man on a bus in Montgomery, Alabama. Her refusal sparked a massive bus boycott that lasted 381 days, ending on December 21, 1956, after the United States Supreme Court ruled that racial segregation on city buses was unconstitutional.
Adafruit has had paid day off for voting for our team for years, if you need help getting that going for your organization, let us know – we can share how and why we did this as well as the good results. Here are some resources for voting by mail, voting in person, and some NY resources for our NY based teams as well. If there are additional resources to add, please let us know – adafruit.com/vote
Stop breadboarding and soldering – start making immediately! Adafruit’s Circuit Playground is jam-packed with LEDs, sensors, buttons, alligator clip pads and more. Build projects with Circuit Playground in a few minutes with the drag-and-drop MakeCode programming site, learn computer science using the CS Discoveries class on code.org, jump into CircuitPython to learn Python and hardware together, TinyGO, or even use the Arduino IDE. Circuit Playground Express is the newest and best Circuit Playground board, with support for CircuitPython, MakeCode, and Arduino. It has a powerful processor, 10 NeoPixels, mini speaker, InfraRed receive and transmit, two buttons, a switch, 14 alligator clip pads, and lots of sensors: capacitive touch, IR proximity, temperature, light, motion and sound. A whole wide world of electronics and coding is waiting for you, and it fits in the palm of your hand.
