Command Line Application to Read, Write, and Edit Metadata – EXIF, GPS, IPTC, and Many More!
Following our recent blog about how poachers are using GPS data in animal fan photos to hunt endangered species we wanted to make sure readers were also aware of exiftool, which makes quick work of single, batch, and even directory-based EXIF/metadata editing:
Sometimes, it is a good idea to scrub EXIF metadata from photos before sharing them, and there is no better tool for the job than exiftool. The command below nukes all EXIF metadata in a photo in one fell swoop (replace foo.jpg with the actual file name):
exiftool -all= foo.jpg
This command removes EXIF metadata from the specified photo…
ExifTool supports many different metadata formats including EXIF, GPS, IPTC, XMP, JFIF, GeoTIFF, ICC Profile, Photoshop IRB, FlashPix, AFCP and ID3, as well as the maker notes of many digital cameras by Canon, Casio, DJI, FLIR, FujiFilm, GE, HP, JVC/Victor, Kodak, Leaf, Minolta/Konica-Minolta, Motorola, Nikon, Nintendo, Olympus/Epson, Panasonic/Leica, Pentax/Asahi, Phase One, Reconyx, Ricoh, Samsung, Sanyo, Sigma/Foveon and Sony.
