Adafruit Holiday Gift Guide 2018: LEDs & NeoPixels

Adafruit holiday guide 2017 blog 1

Todays Gift Guide is all about lighting things up! A great part about the holiday season is all the pretty lights. This year make things glow with LEDs and NeoPixels!

The Adafruit Learning system is full of projects that would make great gifts.

DotStar Feather Wing 6 x 12 RGB LEDs Put on your sunglasses before staring into these 72 configurable RGB LEDs, they are super bright! Arranged in a 6×12 matrix, each 2mm by 2mm sized RGB pixel is individually addressable. Only two pins are required to control all the LEDs. On the bottom we have jumpers for the Data and Clock lines so you can change them from the defaults. Works with any/all of our Feathers! You can cut the default jumper traces and use any pins you like.

Simple and Beautiful NeoPixel Holiday Lights Get your Holiday cheer up and running with NeoPixels! Make a beautiful color shifting light strand to put on your Christmas tree, your house, or add color and light to your artwork. These weatherproof LED pixels work great indoors or outdoors. We’ve included some fancy software to run the lights in an ever-shifting and changing array of color palettes. It’s not much more work to choose and customize your own color palettes to create the exact look you want.
This project is great for beginners. There is just a little bit of easy soldering involved. Most of the challenge is in getting the software set up, but once you’ve got that working, customization is as easy as copy and paste.

Gemma Color touch Pendant Necklace – Make a stunning light up necklace that goes with anything in your closet. It twinkles softly, showing a beautiful color gradient animation. Touch the face of the pendant to make the necklace change color. It’s easy to customize the code to include as many different color combinations as you’d like.
Gemma M0’s onboard capacitive touch pad combined with a solid metal pendant face make this magic happen. We’ve added two different sized NeoPixel rings for 28 beautiful pixels of light.

Ambient Color Control Pad – Build your own Ambient Color Control Pad and make it easy to set colors on NeoPixel strips. Embed them in a huge, colorful, glowing orb, behind a monitor, or above a cabient. NeoTrellis multicolor controller, say hello to NeoPixels!

Use the NeoTrellis with a Feather M4 Express to select colors that illuminate your world. The control pad sends your color selections to a 2m strip of 120 NeoPixels. Gorgeous diffusion courtesy of an inexpensive white plastic lamp, or pick your own diffuser! All programmed with CircuitPython for your coding pleasure.

NeoPixel Matrix SnowFlake Sweater Create a tacky sweater controlled by your phone! It’s easy to put together this Bluefruit and NeoPixel matrix circuit to display snowflakes in a sweater, and control the animation and color using the Adafruit Bluefruit LE Connect app for iOS or Android.
This is an easy project to build but probably not best for a “first project” as there are a lot of concepts being mixed together and the matrix can use quite a lot of power. You can build it with any of our Bluefruit products and the microcontroller of your choice, such as FLORA with its BLE module, or the all-in-one Feather 32u4 Bluefruit LE.
