Rodney Carmichael, NPR Music’s staff hip-hop writer, says he likes to think instead about Black Futures Month, centered around looking forward rather than only looking back. “I just think that a lot of times America has a harder time appreciating what black folks are doing in the present than what we’ve done in the past,” he told us. “I take it upon myself to make sure that I’m thinking about and reminding people through my writing to honor what we’re creating right now.”
