OwlWeather – a spooky ESP8266 weather indicator @hackaday

Via Hackaday comes Alex Shakespeare‘s unique and spooky weather indicator. An ESP8266 microcontroller gathers and displays weather data. The owl at the top “watches” people via an Adafruit AMG8833 thermal sensor array and drives a servo and lever arrangement to do the moving through the use of an Adafruit PCA9685 PWM/servo controller. As far as code:

This project is pretty custom with not a lot of stuff that could potentially be used elsewhere – either way, I’ve decided to put the code on Github.

Below is a summary of the files used:

  • arduino/owlWeather.ino – main sketch that is uploaded to the ESP8266
  • arduino/owlHTML.htm – de-minified version of the Owl main webpage
  • arduino/owlWeather.pdf – background image used
  • nodejs/updateOwl.js – scheduled script that sends new weather information to Owl
  • OwlWeather.fzz – circuit diagram for Owl

A video of the project is below. More info is on Hackaday and the project GitHub site. Great work!

Stop breadboarding and soldering – start making immediately! Adafruit’s Circuit Playground is jam-packed with LEDs, sensors, buttons, alligator clip pads and more. Build projects with Circuit Playground in a few minutes with the drag-and-drop MakeCode programming site, learn computer science using the CS Discoveries class on code.org, jump into CircuitPython to learn Python and hardware together, TinyGO, or even use the Arduino IDE. Circuit Playground Express is the newest and best Circuit Playground board, with support for CircuitPython, MakeCode, and Arduino. It has a powerful processor, 10 NeoPixels, mini speaker, InfraRed receive and transmit, two buttons, a switch, 14 alligator clip pads, and lots of sensors: capacitive touch, IR proximity, temperature, light, motion and sound. A whole wide world of electronics and coding is waiting for you, and it fits in the palm of your hand.
