From the Adafruit forums comes a project by jim_lee which uses a 3D housing and a glass jar to build a soil moisture and watering node. A display can be viewed outside the case, making the insides water resistant.
A pump can be activated to water plants if it senses the soil is too dry via a STEMMA I2C soil sensor.
