Thonny Python Editor upgraded to version 3.2.3 #Thonny #Python @thonnyide

(Updated November 5th)

The Thonny Python editor has been updated to version 3.2.3. A number of bug fixes were completed, as well as new translations and integration of the ESP plug-in.

Thonny supports CircuitPython and will display the REPL and it will save files to devices. It also supports several MicroPython variants in addition to standard Python (CPython).

I tried this version of Thonny on my Windows 10 machine (hint: use the thonny…exe file). I used pip install thonny in a command window as I have Python 3.7 installed and that worked great, installing the program and creating a desktop icon.

I then used Thonny to connect to my Adafruit Circuit Playground Express board running CircuitPython 4. You have to go to Tools -> Options -> Interpreter in Thonny to select the CircuitPython interface mode. But after that, I grabbed the Blink code from the Adafruit Learning System, pasted it in and pressed the green Go icon. Presto! My CPX LED13 blinks!

See the main project page here and the release notes here.

  1. I’m glad you finally got Thonny working!

Indeed, “windows-portable.zip” doesn’t include the installer — it is meant to be extracted to a USB drive and you run it from thonny.exe.

Regular installer for Windows is https://github.com/thonny/thonny/releases/download/v3.2.3/thonny-3.2.3.exe
