An oscilloscope with an Adafruit Edge Badge and CircuitPython #EdgeBadge #CircuitPython@tomacorp

On Twitter, Tom Anderson posts about making an oscilloscope from an Adafruit Edge Badge:

My Adafruit EDGE Badge scope now has a light channel and an accelerometer channel. It is a scope in pure CircuitPython at

From GitHub:

edgemicscope – Adafruit EDGE badge microphone oscilloscope

This Python program creates a scope app for the Adafruit EDGE badge. The graph display shows output from the microphone, accelerometer, light sensor, and a generated sawtooth wave. Adjust the sweep time and sensitivity with the badge buttons. – Copy this file to the EDGE badge, and it runs!

A hardware modification is required to see the microphone output. The code runs without this modification, and shows the other sensor outputs. This change can be done with jumper wires in the connector holes:

  • Connect pin 5 (mic clk) to Tx
  • Connect pin 6 (mic data) to D12 (label is ’12’ on the silk screen) The connector pins are labelled on the board.

This program requires CircuitPython v5.0.0 Alpha 5 or later. See for instructions. The display update commands in v5.0.0 provide the display update functions. Follow the instructions below to update the badge if needed.

Stop breadboarding and soldering – start making immediately! Adafruit’s Circuit Playground is jam-packed with LEDs, sensors, buttons, alligator clip pads and more. Build projects with Circuit Playground in a few minutes with the drag-and-drop MakeCode programming site, learn computer science using the CS Discoveries class on, jump into CircuitPython to learn Python and hardware together, TinyGO, or even use the Arduino IDE. Circuit Playground Express is the newest and best Circuit Playground board, with support for CircuitPython, MakeCode, and Arduino. It has a powerful processor, 10 NeoPixels, mini speaker, InfraRed receive and transmit, two buttons, a switch, 14 alligator clip pads, and lots of sensors: capacitive touch, IR proximity, temperature, light, motion and sound. A whole wide world of electronics and coding is waiting for you, and it fits in the palm of your hand.
