Tensorflow Lite for Microcontrollers and…Shell Scripts? #TensorFlow #TFlite #MachineLearning #ArtificialIntelligence #Make #ShellScripts @TensorFlow @petewarden

A few weeks ago Pete Warden wrote about a recent engineering challenge with the TensorFlow Lite project. The article titled ‘Chesterton’s shell script‘ outlines the decision to use a combination of make and shell scripts as their build tools. Warden outlines the necessity to keep TF Micro easy to compile for anyone working with it:

For TFL Micro to be successful it has to be easy to compile, even for engineers from the embedded world who…may not be familiar with the wonderful world of installing Linux or MacOS dependencies. That meant downloading these packages had to be handled automatically by the build process.

Warden discusses the tradeoffs and highlights the challenges of maintaining this type of script. The moral being that before any implementation like this is rewritten in a way that seems ‘simpler’ it is best to understand the reasoning for that implementation inside and out before re-writing it. This is where Chesterton’s fence comes in which can be summarized with, “understand the reasoning before reforming”.

To learn more about this implementation check out an early version of the shell script here. If you’d like to look at more of Pete Warden’s work on the TF build take a look at the GitHub repo here.

Adafruit has had paid day off for voting for our team for years, if you need help getting that going for your organization, let us know – we can share how and why we did this as well as the good results. Here are some resources for voting by mail, voting in person, and some NY resources for our NY based teams as well. If there are additional resources to add, please let us know – adafruit.com/vote

Stop breadboarding and soldering – start making immediately! Adafruit’s Circuit Playground is jam-packed with LEDs, sensors, buttons, alligator clip pads and more. Build projects with Circuit Playground in a few minutes with the drag-and-drop MakeCode programming site, learn computer science using the CS Discoveries class on code.org, jump into CircuitPython to learn Python and hardware together, TinyGO, or even use the Arduino IDE. Circuit Playground Express is the newest and best Circuit Playground board, with support for CircuitPython, MakeCode, and Arduino. It has a powerful processor, 10 NeoPixels, mini speaker, InfraRed receive and transmit, two buttons, a switch, 14 alligator clip pads, and lots of sensors: capacitive touch, IR proximity, temperature, light, motion and sound. A whole wide world of electronics and coding is waiting for you, and it fits in the palm of your hand.
