Meet the Pioneering Scientist Dame Jean Macnamara #GoogleDoodle #WomeninStem
Last Wednesday the Google Doodle celebrated the birthday of Jean Macnamara. Born on April 1, 1899, Macnamara was integral to the creation of a polio vacine.
It was her collaborative work with Frank Macfarlane Burnet that led to the identification of multiple strains of the polio virus, which proved pivotal in the developemtn of the Salk vaccine. She was mad honorary medical officer to the physiotherapy department of the Royal Children’s Hospital from 1928 to 1951 and for her work with the children, she was made a Dame Commander of the British Empire in 1935.
In 1966, Macnamara became the first woman awarded an honorary Doctorate of Laws by Melbourne University. Today, Macnamara is remembered for her pioneering work as a doctor and scientist whoe dedicated her life to her research.
