Air-quality data from an M5Stack ATOM with MicroPython #MicroPython #IoT #InternetOfThings

LeMaRiva Tech’s tutorial connects an M5Stack ATOM running MicroPython to the Google Cloud Platform (GCP) to collect air-quality variables obtained from reading two sensors:

  • BME680: a gas sensor that integrates high-linearity and high-accuracy gas, pressure, humidity and temperature sensors.
  • PMSA003A: a digital and universal particle concentration sensor, which can be used to obtain the number of suspended particles in the air, i.e. the concentration of particles, and output them to a digital interface.

Spring in Europe has already started and many people are having allergy problems. Therefore, I thought of making a project to measure air quality and collect this data to train a model that can tell me, when is the best time to open my apartment windows to let some fresh air into the apartment and thus minimize possible allergy attacks and sneezing! Like almost everyone right now (thanks to COVID-19), I’m working from home and this beautiful photo (Fig. 1) shows the possible causes of allergies.

The tutorial covers the following:

  • Flash MicroPython on the M5Stack ATOM
  • Create an IoT device on GCP and its credentials to connect the M5Stack running MicroPython
  • Deploy the code on the M5Stack ATOM using Visual Studio Code
  • Run the application to collect data.

Adafruit has had paid day off for voting for our team for years, if you need help getting that going for your organization, let us know – we can share how and why we did this as well as the good results. Here are some resources for voting by mail, voting in person, and some NY resources for our NY based teams as well. If there are additional resources to add, please let us know – adafruit.com/vote

Stop breadboarding and soldering – start making immediately! Adafruit’s Circuit Playground is jam-packed with LEDs, sensors, buttons, alligator clip pads and more. Build projects with Circuit Playground in a few minutes with the drag-and-drop MakeCode programming site, learn computer science using the CS Discoveries class on code.org, jump into CircuitPython to learn Python and hardware together, TinyGO, or even use the Arduino IDE. Circuit Playground Express is the newest and best Circuit Playground board, with support for CircuitPython, MakeCode, and Arduino. It has a powerful processor, 10 NeoPixels, mini speaker, InfraRed receive and transmit, two buttons, a switch, 14 alligator clip pads, and lots of sensors: capacitive touch, IR proximity, temperature, light, motion and sound. A whole wide world of electronics and coding is waiting for you, and it fits in the palm of your hand.
