#AdafruitLearnSystem Weekly Update

Last week on the Adafruit Learning System, we published 7 new guides. While Halloween may have come and gone, there is still a lot to learn and enjoy from many of these creative new guides. Learn how to make a 3D printed Frankenstein monster, build a custom costume face mask, or create a remote control candy dispenser ghost. Aside from the fun Halloween guides, we also published a few other great guides, including one on using Bluetooth Low Energy with CircuitPython.

Favorite New Guide

This week my favorite new guide was published by Brent Rubell.

Is there a new guide on the Adafruit Learning System? Glance over at this attention-grabbing Matrix Portal New Guide scroller. Every hour, this project fetches the latest guides from the Adafruit Learning System and displays them on the Matrix Portal.

You’ll use CircuitPython and the Adafruit Matrix Portal to fetch JSON data from the Adafruit Learning System’s public API, parse the data, and display it scrolling across a RGB Matrix.

This internet-connected project can easily be adapted to a REST API of your choice to scroll data of your choice: negative COVID-19 tests, sports scores, positive news headlines, or stock prices.

ALS Deep Cut

The Adafruit Learning System has now 2,335 published guides! As you can imagine, some amazing guides of years past get buried and lost. ALS Deep Cuts brings these guides back up to the surface.

This weeks ALS Deep Cut was published all the way back in 2013 (our oldest deep cut yet)! Make a wearable VU meter necktie with Flora.

Make your necktie light up like a VU meter! This Flora project uses the Electret Microphone Amplifier to trigger 16 Flora NeoPixels sewn with conductive thread along the length of the tie.

VOTE!

Collin published this very timely guide showing how to create your own I Voted electronic pin!

“I voted” stickers are so last election. This year, kick things up several notches by using a medium that commands real attention – electronics!

Spread the word by creating your own interactive election wearable using a Feather + OLED Featherwing. Once you’ve cast your ballot, tap a button to change the text from “I VOTE” to “I VOTED!” and show your democratic participation off to the world.

Stop breadboarding and soldering – start making immediately! Adafruit’s Circuit Playground is jam-packed with LEDs, sensors, buttons, alligator clip pads and more. Build projects with Circuit Playground in a few minutes with the drag-and-drop MakeCode programming site, learn computer science using the CS Discoveries class on code.org, jump into CircuitPython to learn Python and hardware together, TinyGO, or even use the Arduino IDE. Circuit Playground Express is the newest and best Circuit Playground board, with support for CircuitPython, MakeCode, and Arduino. It has a powerful processor, 10 NeoPixels, mini speaker, InfraRed receive and transmit, two buttons, a switch, 14 alligator clip pads, and lots of sensors: capacitive touch, IR proximity, temperature, light, motion and sound. A whole wide world of electronics and coding is waiting for you, and it fits in the palm of your hand.
