#AdafruitLearnSystem Weekly Update: MagTag Edition

Since my last update, there were a whopping 15 new guides published on the Adafruit Learning System! 12 of those guides all involve my favorite new product, the Adafruit MagTag. If you haven’t yet checked out what this mighty board can do, be sure to check out all the guides published for it so far. Outside of the MagTag guides, we published a new product guide, a guide to teach you how to make your own FeatureWing test rig, and a guide showing you how to use Microsoft Expressive Pixels with the Adafruit Matrix Portal (you don’t want to miss this one).

Favorite New Guide

I know this week is all about the MagTag, but I couldn’t help it, this guide by Brent Rubell is my favorite this week.

Create and display colorful animations using the Microsoft Expressive Pixels Application and display them on your Adafruit Matrix Portal!

In this guide, you will connect the Expressive Pixels Windows app with an Adafruit Matrix Portal  RGB LED matrix panel to:

  • display dazzling animations on the RGB LED matrix
  • save images directly to the Matrix Portal using its built-in flash chip
  • trigger animations using the Matrix Portal’s GPIO pins.

The ExpressivePixels open-source firmware can run on a variety of different types of hardware. We’ve collaborated with Microsoft to create a platform implementation for the Adafruit Matrix Portal using the Adafruit_Protomatter RGB Matrix library.

ALS Deep Cut

With so many guides on the Adafruit Learning System, some amazing guides of years past get buried and lost. ALS Deep Cuts brings these guides back up to the surface.

This week’s deep cut is about a product that while we have had available for a long time, I just recently started experimenting with. The eTape Liquid Level Sensor! This guide by Tony DiCola was published way back in 2014!

This guide will show you how to build a smart measuring cup which displays the volume of liquid in real time on a web page. No longer will you need to squint and guess while measuring liquids; the smart measuring cup’s web page clearly shows the measured volume, and even converts between units or tares measurements like a digital scale!

Featured Category: eInk / ePaper

This category is growing at an incredible pace. Also, if you are one of the lucky ones to get the latest Adabox, you have a lot of fun new guides to explore!
