Today is Martin Luther King Jr. day, it’s a paid holiday at Adafruit and years ago we were inspired by the “day of service” and added paid time off for charity for our team. We’ve tried to encourage other manufacturers and tech companies to make Martin Luther King Jr. an official company holiday, and as a day of service. Many do not (yet), but some have or begun the work for next year, and some have added paid time off for charity. No matter what the industry it is, there is something we can all do. If you are someone who can build, we have a lot of work to do. The people who can build, we can build a better future together –
We have our series of posts, using our online platforms as an electronic’s company, to celebrate the life and work of Martin Luther King Jr. and the people who are continuing the work. We can all remember a great person by continuing Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy.
There is so much to do.
“When evil men plot, good men must plan. When evil men burn and bomb, good men must build and bind. When evil men shout ugly words of hatred, good men must commit themselves to the glories of love. Where evil men would seek to perpetuate an unjust status quo, good men must seek to bring into being a real order of justice.”
“Let us not seek to satisfy our thirst for freedom by drinking from the cup of bitterness and hatred.”
“We must accept finite disappointment, but we must never lose infinite hope.”
There is a lot to read, think about, and do. A thread of speeches and sermons in which he speaks truth to power, shares about his philosophy of nonviolence, and expounds on issues of injustice and what our righteous, rigorous response should be. Relevant. Revelatory. Revolutionary.
There is so much to do.
The Black Lives Matter Education & Workshop Kit is an open-source design the Adafruit team published during the peaceful demonstrations for social justice in the summer of 2020 – http://adafruit.com/BlackLivesMatterKit
Stop breadboarding and soldering – start making immediately! Adafruit’s Circuit Playground is jam-packed with LEDs, sensors, buttons, alligator clip pads and more. Build projects with Circuit Playground in a few minutes with the drag-and-drop MakeCode programming site, learn computer science using the CS Discoveries class on code.org, jump into CircuitPython to learn Python and hardware together, TinyGO, or even use the Arduino IDE. Circuit Playground Express is the newest and best Circuit Playground board, with support for CircuitPython, MakeCode, and Arduino. It has a powerful processor, 10 NeoPixels, mini speaker, InfraRed receive and transmit, two buttons, a switch, 14 alligator clip pads, and lots of sensors: capacitive touch, IR proximity, temperature, light, motion and sound. A whole wide world of electronics and coding is waiting for you, and it fits in the palm of your hand.
