The Great Search is a new series of videos focused on searching the Digi-Key catalog to narrow down to the parts you want to buy. This week (video):
It’s time for some keyboard action. After nudging by just-about-everyone on the Adafruit team, we’ve finally started looking at mechanical keyboard parts. It seems like our reverse-mount NeoPixels from a month ago may come in handy! We roughed out a few PCB designs this afternoon with a variety of keys and will start sourcing various switches and keycaps this week.
Wanna get parts to make your own customized mechanical keyboard or keypad? Digi-Key can hook you up! They’ve got Cherry MX switches for immediate shipment – both clicky Blue’s and linear Black’s
We also found a lot of threads where folks use slim mill-max sockets to hot-swap their keys. Looks like these slim sockets can press-fit into PCBs quite easily. The 7305 are gold plate, the 0305 are tin plate. Here’s some part numbers that were popular: https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/mill-max-manufacturing-corp/0305-2-15-80-47-80-10-0/2639493 and https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/mill-max-manufacturing-corp/7305-0-15-15-47-27-10-0/1765737
