We made single NeoKey breakout boards for mechanical key prototyping, but what if you want many many keys? This funky panel of parts is a 5×6 grid of snap-apart NeoKey breakouts that are pre-wired for row/column matrix scanning (there’s even a diode on each switch). A NeoPixel + 1uF cap is underneath and with a little cleverness we can have the signal automatically snake through any rectangular design. The light blue is non-plated routing slots with a 0.125″ hole spaced 0.75″ apart so it can be mechanically attached easily. Small holes keep the boards together until you want to separate. Or of course you can also just tile more in either direction. Kailh sockets allow any MX-compatible switch to be used. We’ll try doing a staggered layout as well, but wanted to start with simple ortho-linear.
