Observe Volunteer Responsibility Amnesty Day each solstice @brainwane #volunteeramnestyday
As a Free Software hobbyist, I’ve worked as a volunteer on a lot of projects over the years. There’s not really a defined way to get closure when it’s a responsibility I don’t want or can’t handle anymore. That’s why I was interested to read about this project, which relevant for folks doing non-software volunteer work as well.
Volunteer Responsibility Amnesty Day is about checking with yourself, and ending the commitments you need to end – maybe by taking a break, or by rotating it on to someone else, or by sunsetting a project.
Several months ago, in my talk “What Would Open Source Look Like If It Were Healthy?”, I told a story of an overwhelmed open source software maintainer in a hypothetical future where every solstice is a Responsibility Amnesty Day. He uses one to say “Sorry, I need to stop doing this.”
Check out the website, and then do your own personal inventory. The next solstice is December 21, 2021. The one after that is June 21, 2022. (via metafilter projects)

Stop breadboarding and soldering – start making immediately! Adafruit’s Circuit Playground is jam-packed with LEDs, sensors, buttons, alligator clip pads and more. Build projects with Circuit Playground in a few minutes with the drag-and-drop MakeCode programming site, learn computer science using the CS Discoveries class on code.org, jump into CircuitPython to learn Python and hardware together, TinyGO, or even use the Arduino IDE. Circuit Playground Express is the newest and best Circuit Playground board, with support for CircuitPython, MakeCode, and Arduino. It has a powerful processor, 10 NeoPixels, mini speaker, InfraRed receive and transmit, two buttons, a switch, 14 alligator clip pads, and lots of sensors: capacitive touch, IR proximity, temperature, light, motion and sound. A whole wide world of electronics and coding is waiting for you, and it fits in the palm of your hand.
