Watch “Men in Suits,” an Ode to Creature Suit Actors
For several years, one of my favorite films could only be found as a rare independent DVD release. I was thrilled to learn that director Frank Woodward has since made this documentary available on YouTube (legitimately and in 720P).
Men in Suits features behind-the-scenes footage and interviews with legendary creature actors and filmmakers: Haruo Nakajima, Doug Jones, Guillermo del Toro, among others. There are women in suits too! The film’s name pokes fun at the misconception that this is simple gruntwork by replaceable “guys in rubber suits.”
You learn just how much craft there really is in all this…always, always rooted in traditional acting, with the added challenge of emoting through a stifling, blinding, heavy costume. Each actor shares passionate (and sometimes hilarious) stories of how they got started and how they endure, interspersed with tons of great monster footage!
