Abby Nicolas’ personal project The Borderline is a study of sovereignty and how 3 communities view ‘borders’:
The Akwesasne Mohawk Nation transcends the imposed US and Canadian border. While the community disregards the border within the confines of Akwesasne, border patrol from both the US and Canada view this land differently. The diptychs indicate how the residents of Akwesasne view their community (left) and how the US and Canadian border patrol see the community (right). The dialogue between the images is representational of the ongoing struggle to maintain sovereignty and jurisdiction over the community.
