Just in case you’re interested in a high-quality USB-B mic, but you don’t want to spend a lot of dough, here’s a DIY option from DIY Perks. Here’s the project from Sonic State:
DIY Perks has a great channel for many audio projects – have a look at his acoustic panels, DIY glass speaker or his guide on fixing headphones if you want to see more. In his latest video, he’s designed a high quality self contained USB-C microphone for the cost of around $30 – with a built-in stand and amplifier. He provides all the steps needed to create the mic as well as a number of links and project reference files to put it together yourself.
You’ll need a soldering iron and possibly a mini-blowtorch but it’s an otherwise easy to follow tutorial which will result in a satisfying project to make. He ends the video by doing a direct comparison with a Neumann U87, as well as some other mics.
Have an amazing project to share? The Electronics Show and Tell is every Wednesday at 7:30pm ET! To join, head over to YouTube and check out the show’s live chat and our Discord!
