Improving Your Tabletop Gaming Experience with Props
In this Miscast video, Trent talks about something near and dear to my heart. As I have discussed on Adafruit before, I am a tabletop gamer who loves immersion: props, terrain, minis. I also love costumes, accents, mood music, and anything else that puts players IN the game.
I don’t care if the costumes aren’t theme- or period-perfect or the acting and the accents are horrible (they often are). It still creates another level of immersion and fun.
Here, Trent talks about what a literal game-changer it was when he went to a game where the host had really taken the time to dress the room and the table in the spirit of the game (in this case, Eldritch Horror, a Cthulhu-based board game). Ever since, he’s been doing the same with all of his games, whether board or RPG.
There are some great ideas in here, like asking each player to bring a theme-related prop, getting props and costumes from charity shops, and using mood music and lighting to help set the scene.
