Maybe rich people should build weird fountains again
Here’s another cool video from Tom Scott on YouTube. I appreciate Tom Scott’s perspective here, which is that, when possible, rich people should use their money to help others, but if they are going to use some of it to peacock, they should at least do something cool and interesting that will endure. I also have to say the Wasserspiele of Bergpark looks far more impressive than most historical grounds or garden features I’ve ever seen (and somehow I’ve seen a lot, I’m guessing it was my parents way of getting some culture in on family trips without risking us destroying objects at indoor museums). The engineering behind the upkeep of this 300yo fountain that shoots 50 meters (roughly 160 feet) into the air by way of gravity, is remarkable.
The Wasserspiele of Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe are 300 years old, powered entirely by gravity, and entertaining tourists. As legacies for rich people go, there are far worse ones.
