I had to laugh when I saw The Net categorized under good here. This is mostly because I agree! It’s a movie that while beyond farcicle in many ways, it’s so fun to watch and (as Gizmodo points out) it was ahead of its time in some ways, too. Wait – also, how have I never seen Sneakers? Must watch ASAP.
I was a little surpsied not to see The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (Swedish version with starring Noomi Rapace obviously) included here. I’ve always thought about it as a hacker movie. Plague is so awesome!
Good hacker movies are hard to come by. Why? For one thing, it’s pretty hard to make an interesting movie about a guy sitting at a computer. For another, all of the drama of hacking and the digital world is mostly invisible to the naked eye. This presents a particular challenge for a visual storytelling medium like cinema. Some hacker movies have been good. Others have been bad. And still others should have never been made. We shall not speak their names (after this rundown).
