In this recent video, Tom Scott visits the sole operating US Remote Encoding Center (down from down from 55 in less than 25 years). This is where all US mail gets sent that defies legibility at the initial sorting center. I like to think of it as a no-quite-dead-yet-letter office (Bartleby anyone?).
At the Remote Encoding Center in Salt Lake City, keyers process 1.2 billion images of mail every year. It’s a more difficult job than I thought.
