How the Cthulhu Mythos Transcended its Creator, H.P. Lovecraft
The ever-widen reach of the Cthulhu mythos is undeniable. What has been dubbed an example of “synthetic folklore” it has traveled light years away from the original works of H.P. Lovecraft himself. It has found its way into the works of many other authors and films, TV shows, tabletop, roleplaying, and video games, and dedicated conventions. It has even transcended (and cast a harsh light back upon) his virulent racism and xenophobia, addressed head-on in such TV shows and novels as Lovecraft Country, Ring Shout, and The Ballad of Black Tom.
In this episode of PBS’ excellent Monstrum, host Dr. Emily Zarka looks at the strange origins and persistent presence in popular culture of the cosmic horror of H.P. Lovecraft.
