Sound-Reactive Mask for Lady Gaga from Smooth Technology #WearableWednesday
If you think that the projects over in the Adafruit Learn System are only for your own fun and edification, Smooth Technology might disagree. This group of artistic engineers and engineering artists work out of Brooklyn, creating wonderful projects for famous musicians doing the sorts of things famous musicians do: go on tours, rock the Met Gala, and perform at awards shows. They’re responsible for the Billy Porter grammy hat as well as the LEDs used for Taylor Swift’s 1989 tour. More recently they made a sound-reactive mask for Lady Gaga at the VMAs. In her mid-pandemic VMA studio performance, Lady Gaga wanted a one-of-a-kind mask that was protective, sound-reactive, and wouldn’t interfere with her ability to sing live on set. We created a mask with animations controlled by her voice, with visualizations inspired by her Chromatica album art. The mask included a wireless receiver so the lighting designer could control color and other parameters to match the surrounding performance.
