Rammed earth, bottle walls, straw bale, rubber tire walls, recycled plastic — there are so many building material alternatives. Some work, some really, really don’t.
Here’s yet another material proponents say is the alternative material to pay attention to: hemp blocks. These are LEGO-like blocks made from hemp fiber and lime. All sorts of promising benefits are claimed: Lightweight (about 25 pounds/block), fire resistant, highly insulating (10x more than concrete), carbon negative (it sequesters more carbon than it creates in its life cycle), and it doesn’t require mortar.
