Philips, an electronics giant, has faded from its former glory
Having established itself as one of the leading electronics companies of the 20th century, Philips is an easily recognizable household name. It’s biggest business was, of course, lightbulbs! One of the most fun facts of its glory days was that Philips created both a price fixing cartel and planned obsolescence for lightbulbs (but that’s another story).
TechAltar put together an excellent YouTube video recounting the entire history of Philips and it’s fall from prominence. While their products are seemingly everywhere, they are not nearly as successful as their brand prevalence might suggest. Today, Philips in its entirety has less than 1/10 the market capitalization of Samsung, yet at their height, Philips was the 2nd largest semiconductor manufacturer in the world.
The story of how they got to where they are today has lots of lessons for those that follow. Watch the video here.
